Systemic Design Association

Who are we?

The Systemic Design Association

The Systemic Design Association is the international community for the expanding range of systemic design scholars and practitioners, those leading emerging practices, design-led systems research, and advanced design methods evolving from systems thinking and design. The SDA is a non-profit membership society with an elected board, registered in Norway.

The Systemic Design Association (SDA) was formed to convene educators, practitioners, and researchers to co-evolve an interdisciplinary field over the long term. The SDA formed in 2018 after 7 years of hosting the Relating Systems Thinking and Design (RSD) Symposium which has become a primary conference for those in the field.

SDA supports the movement toward pragmatic systemic design practice development, applying the learning from the RSD Symposia to preferred methods and guidelines. The SDA was formed to sustain this movement, to build a base of research and scholarship to support new design theory and practice in complex systems. The association published the open access journal Contexts – The Systemic Design Journal, with Peter Jones as Editor in Chief. Contexts is a continuous publishing model journal, and accepts and reviews submissions from the complete range of studies and research approaches in systems and design.
